Companion Animal Facility
Council's main impounding facility is located in Narrabri adjacent to the sale yards. The facility is not manned. Animals can only be viewed / surrendered / released or impounded by prior arrangement with the Ranger. Please Contact Council to arrange for any of these services.
Dogs that are injured or suffering should not be delivered to the facility and should be delivered to the closest vet clinic.
A person wishing to retrieve an impounded animal are be liable for the following charges as per Councils Fees & Charges:
- Registration fee if unregistered
- Approximately $60.00 (Vet Charge) microchipping fee if the animal is not microchipped;
- Minimum $50.00 impounding fee + a $25 sustenance fee that is charged for their care and food whilst impounded.
- Any veterinary costs incurred;
- Payment of any damages that the animal may have caused whilst roaming i.e., injury to stock, another animal or property damage; and
- Payment of any penalty notice issued.
Dogs for Adoption
Please visit Narrabri Shire Council's Facebook page for updates on dogs available at Narrabri Pound. When dogs are available for adoption, a photo and any details regarding breed, sex and age will be advertised.
Please contact the local vet for microchipping fees and Contact Council for registration fees and appointments.
*All pound dogs are required to be microchipped and registered as part of the rehoming process.

Lost Animals
If you sell or give away a dog it is your responsibility as the ‘old’ owner to update the new owner’s details on the Companion Animals register at your local Council, otherwise penalties may apply. Please Contact Council for more information.
