Narrabri students explore disaster preparedness with Big Map workshops
Published on 19 December 2024
Council, in collaboration with NSW SES, has hosted engaging Big Map Workshops at Narrabri High School and Wee Waa High School on 12 and 13 December.
The workshops provided students with an interactive and educational experience using a large-scale map of the Namoi Valley catchment.
Facilitated by Council’s Community Recovery Officer and SES representatives, the sessions explored vital topics to build local disaster preparedness, including:
- How levee banks influence water flow
- Recognising early signs of flooding using key infrastructure and landmarks
- The impact of flood waters on local communities
- Opportunities to collaborate with the SES and contribute to disaster resilience
These hands-on sessions enabled students to gain practical knowledge about disaster preparedness while deepening their understanding of local flood risks and mitigation strategies.
By using the Big Map, students connected learnings with real-world scenarios, empowering them to play an active role in ensuring the safety and resilience of their community.
"It was fantastic to see the students so engaged with the Big Map and keen to learn how they can make a difference in disaster preparedness," Council's Community Recovery Officer said.
"These workshops provide important skills that help build a safer and more resilient community for the future.
"Thank you to Narrabri High School, Wee Waa High School, NSW SES, and the students for embracing this initiative and contributing to the ongoing efforts to prepare for and respond to natural disasters across the region."
