Narrabri High School Year 9 and 10 students paid a visit to Narrabri Shire Council on Monday, 20 May as part of their Educational Pathways class to hear the stories of council employees and learn more about the diverse local government career pathways available.

Head of Teacher Careers, Rachel Shearer, facilitated the visit and wanted to use the opportunity to work on students’ employability skills and confidence to make informed decisions about their career paths and study patterns.

“As part of the process, we wanted to visit Council with students to learn about the many career pathways available with local government,” said Mrs Shearer.

“We were excited to hear about each employee's path to the council and learn about what the Narrabri Shire Council is looking for in potential employees.

“Many students only see the council as collecting rubbish, fixing roads and parks. We would like them to see the various sections of the council to broaden their knowledge and see the council as a potential future pathway.”

Students heard from a range of staff in different departments, before receiving a tour of Council’s Administration Building.

Council’s General Manager, Rob Williams was pleased for council staff to engage with the high school students.

“Our council team are generally very well qualified and undertake a vast array of functions that represent many and varied industry sectors. If we can encourage our local high school students into the local government sector, they are destined for a fruitful and rewarding career in a locality that they have strong connections to,” said Williams.
