Community Unites for Dementia Awareness

The Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre hosted a heartwarming community event on Wednesday, 14 August as Arts North West partnered with the Narrabri Dementia Friendly Community Committee and Hunter New England Health to raise awareness about dementia.
The community was invited for a morning of social yarning to create pieces that now adorn the Dementia Awareness Tree Project outside the Information Centre, and to enjoy morning tea while engaging in important discussions about dementia and available local resources.
The gathering was designed to provide a supportive space for individuals to share their experiences and learn more about dementia, reinforcing the message that no one is alone in this journey.
Hunter New England Memory and Cognition nurse Kylie Finlay acted as guest speaker for the event and thanked Narrabri Shire Council for its involvement in getting the project off the ground.
“It is hoped that this yarn-bombed dementia awareness tree sparks conversation and raises awareness, which will bring about positive change for those living with dementia and their carers,” said Mrs Finlay.
Residents were also encouraged to contribute to this initiative by dropping off handmade items at four designated donation stations throughout Narrabri, which would be pieced together for the yarn bombing.
The chosen colours for these contributions are aqua, turquoise, and teal, symbolising dementia awareness.
The Dementia Awareness Tree will stand as a testament to Narrabri’s commitment to raising awareness and supporting those impacted by dementia.
