Magpie Maps now available (26-Sep-17)

To help residents navigate their way around town and plan alternate routes, Narrabri Shire Council has developed a Magpie Map. This map displays an icon in the areas where residents have experienced territorial magpies.

Whilst following the map is no guarantee you won’t encounter a swooping magpie, the map will help people avoid areas where others have experienced attacks or be more prepared when they travel around town.

If you experience an attack in an area that isn’t identified on the map, please contact Council on 6799 6866, send us a message on Facebook or email council@narrabri.nsw.gov.au.

BOGGABRI Residents - please send through your locations for swooping magpies and we will do up your map as well!

Why do Magpies swoop?
Male magpies only swoop during mating season in spring due to a huge increase in testosterone where they become over-protective Dads.
The mating season is generally between late August to late October with attacks occasionally experienced outside that time.

Whilst most attacks are just swooping, some magpies can become particularly aggressive and can even attack the same person continuously.

It is important that you don’t provoke magpies, stay well clear of known nests and even plan alternate routes.

If you encounter a particularly aggressive magpie please contact Council to report its location.
