Media Release - Regional support for Intermodal Terminal (1-May-17)

Regional council support for Narrabri Shire as the location for the Inland Rail Intermodal

The Namoi Joint Organisation of councils has placed its support behind Narrabri Shire as the most suitable location for the region’s Inland Rail intermodal terminal.

In continuing Narrabri Shire’s extensive efforts to be recognised as the most suitable location for an intermodal terminal connected to the Inland Rail project, Mayor Cathy Redding recently sought and received the support of the region’s councils through the Namoi Joint Organisation.

“Narrabri Shire is very appreciative of the Namoi Joint Organisation’s support and recognition as the preferred and most logical site for an intermodal terminal associated with Inland Rail.” stated Mayor Cathy Redding.

Narrabri Shire is the main freight hub in the northern NSW region. It is already a significant hub for the transport of bulk agricultural commodities and coal, handling in the vicinity of 50,000 TEU’s per annum across the current rail infrastructure in the Shire.

Freight movements currently through the Shire sit between 2.5 and 3 million tonnes annually. With agriculture production forecast to increase by anything up to 2 million tonnes over the next decade, it is a logical conclusion that Narrabri Shire be the location for the region’s intermodal terminal capitalising on the Shire’s access to Inland Rail. Such a conclusion strengthens the Shire’s position as the main freight hub in northern NSW.

“Historic and current freight movement statistics, forecast agricultural and coal growth and Narrabri Shire’s access to the Inland Rail route combined with this latest decision by the Namoi Joint Organisation is increasingly mounting evidence and proof to both the Federal and State Government that Narrabri Shire is the location for the region’s intermodal terminal,” concluded Mayor Cathy Redding.

The Namoi Joint Organisation will shortly formally advise both the Federal and State Government of its support.

Ends

The Namoi Joint Organisation council membership includes: Gunnedah Shire Council, Gwydir Shire Council, Liverpool Plains Shire Council, Narrabri Shire Council, Tamworth Regional Council, Uralla Shire Council and Walcha Council.
