Media Release - Progress on Narrabri's Main Street (22-Feb-17)

Progress on Narrabri’s Main Street

The tenders for the two lighting options for Stage One of the Narrabri Main Street upgrade were presented to Council on Tuesday 21 February 2017 where Council resolved to proceed with the centre median strip option.

After carefully weighing up both options it was resolved that the best option to fulfil the requirements of the CBD Master plan was to install lighting on a centre median strip.

“This option will allow the main street to keep all of its carparks, rectify lighting deficiencies and provide an option for adequate shade,” explained Mayor Cathy Redding. “These were the key points highlighted by the community throughout the extensive consultation for the CBD Master plan.”

“The main street is the heart of the Narrabri community and it will be transformed into a vibrant and welcoming public space that celebrates our town and encourages more business and social activity. It is exciting to see that this project can now proceed after many years of discussions and planning.”

“The installation of the centre median is just the first stage of the CBD upgrade but will have a very positive impact on the look and feel of the main street.”

“The centre median will cover three blocks from Bowen through to Lloyd Streets and will be completed block by block to minimise disruption to business activity.”

“A further report will be presented to Council at the March Ordinary Meeting in relation to the design of the median strip. At that stage Council should have a timeframe of when the works will commence.”
