Media Release - The Mayor speaks with ABC on Narrabri Gas Project (5-Apr-17)

Last week, Mayor Cathy Redding was interviewed by ABC in relation to the Narrabri Gas Project. The content of the interview will be used for ABC online, radio and television. The interviewers from Newcastle and Sydney were travelling around the region to get a snapshot of the Narrabri Shire community mid-way through the public exhibition period for the Santos Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) through the NSW Department of Planning. They interviewed the Mayor as well as other stakeholders both for and against the Narrabri Gas Project.

“The interview was a great opportunity to provide an overview of how Council is tackling the submission for the Santos EIS,” explained Mayor, Cathy Redding.

“Council has been working closely with the NSW Department of Planning to ensure the community have access to the information about the EIS to assist them with making their submissions. We were pleased when they extended the submission period to 22 May to allow the community to review this very complex document.”

“In the interview, I explained that Council staff are working through the relevant sections of the EIS in order to formulate its submission. We don’t have geologists or hydrologists at Council so we are focussing on the areas we do have expertise in. These will include the social impacts of the proposed development and the impacts on local infrastructure.”

“Council will be speaking to various stakeholders, both for and against the project in order to develop its submission on behalf of the community and encourages members of the community to put their own submissions in as well.”

“We will be encouraging the Department of Planning to conduct an independent peer review due to the complexities of the project and to use the precautionary principle when assessing the EIS and making its determination.”

Content of the interview may be shown by ABC over the next few weeks.
