|Results in from Community Thinking Big! (21-Mar-17)
In late 2016 and early 2017, Narrabri Shire Council asked the community to “Think Big” about its future and participate in the community engagement activities for the review of the Narrabri Shire Community Strategic Plan.
Council conducted a very comprehensive Community Engagement Strategy across Narrabri Shire to encourage participation from a wide range of residents. The purpose of this extensive community engagement was to obtain valuable feedback from the community on key priorities to establish a long-term strategic direction for the Shire over the next 10-year period.
At the March Ordinary Council Meeting, Council was presented with a report reviewing the community engagement activities that took place and the feedback received.
“After gathering and analysing community input across the different engagement mediums, a Community Engagement Report was developed including the key findings, themes and priority areas,” explained Mayor Cathy Redding.
“Community engagement for this plan trialled several new methods including Social Media Conversation Hours and special postcards aimed at encouraging feedback from pre-school and school-aged students. These new elements, as well as the more traditional ones were all met with great enthusiasm by the community.”
“Over 1,000 different members of the community participated in the community engagement activities with the main source of feedback being the community survey which was completed by over 440 different residents.”
“The most significant result was that over 80% of our residents surveyed view their quality of life in Narrabri Shire as good or better; demonstrating that we are servicing the community well, and a majority are happy with the infrastructure, services and lifestyle offered in Narrabri Shire.”
“Without the enthusiasm and active participation of residents, we would not have received the quality of information we did. Council thanks the community for the time they took to attend workshops, complete surveys and have their say in the future of our Shire.”
Council is now in a phase of further analysing the information received and developing strategies and actions for the 4-year Delivery Plan. The reviewed Community Strategic Plan and the resulting four-year Delivery Plan and Operational Plan will be on public exhibition over April/May 2017 for the community to provide further feedback.
