|Media Release - Tender Documents for CBD Lighting (1-Feb-17)
Tenders called for CBD Lighting project
Tenders are currently open for the Narrabri Central Business District (CBD) Lighting project and will close Tuesday 14 February 2017. The CBD Lighting project is a vital component of the broader Narrabri CBD upgrade developed through the CBD Master plan.
The CBD Master plan has been a long-term project of Council. Given the important nature of the project, a comprehensive briefing was provided to the new Council following their election in September 2016 ensuring they were fully informed on the history of the project and issues that have been raised, in particular with the lighting design aspect. The CBD Master plan which was adopted by Council in November 2013, highlighted strategies to address the main community concerns which were maximising car parking, providing adequate shade as well as rectifying lighting deficiencies.
“The installation of lighting was considered as a high priority by Council due to the inadequacies of the existing system,” explained General Manager Stewart Todd. “Numerous design options were considered by Council in consultation with lighting consultants.”
The two options now being considered are combined footpath and road shoulder lighting along the sides of Maitland Street and centre median lighting where lighting will be placed in a centre median strip down Maitland Street.
“Due to the locations of awnings in the main street, not all light poles could be placed on the footpath. At the request of the Narrabri Chamber of Commerce, traffic cones were placed in the known locations where the lighting poles would need to be placed on the road shoulder and not the footpath,” explained General Manager, Stewart Todd. “These traffic cones were placed in late 2016 down the main street to allow the Chamber of Commerce and community to visualise how this option may look.”
Council resolved in October 2016 to seek tenders for both main street lighting options.
The Tenders are expected, whilst working to an extremely tight time frame, to be presented to Council at the February 2017 Ordinary Meeting for resolution.
