Media Release - Accessibility Issues Under the Spotlight (30-May-17)

Accessibility issues under the spotlight

Narrabri Shire Council is moving towards making services and facilities more inclusive and accessible for the whole community including those with a disability.

Council’s Mayor, Cr Cathy Redding, outlined that the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan was now on public exhibition as part of Council’s suite of Strategic Documents providing the community the opportunity to comment.

“The draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan will help us remove barriers and enable people with a disability to participate equally in our community,” explained Mayor Redding.

“Extensive engagement was undertaken to put together this action plan to help Council understand and identify the barriers to inclusion within the community. A broad cross-section of the community got involved in the consultation process to help seek solutions to make improvements.”

A disability means a functional limitation or impairment including cognitive, physical, mental, sensory and functional deficits. These may be present from birth, acquired through accident, illness or age and can be temporary or permanent impairments.

“Many members of our community would have been affected by ill health, cared for someone having difficulties or known of someone with a disability so this plan affects a large portion of our community.”

“The plan integrates into Council’s Strategic Plans to enable planned services, facilities and programs to encompass this inclusive approach over the next 4 years. This will allow Council to deliver improved services, facilities and programs to support people with a disability and their carers.”

“This is a positive move in the right direction for Council, making our community more accessible and inclusive for all,” added Mayor Redding.

To view the plan, head to Council’s website and search Disability Inclusion Action Plan. The public consultation period ends Thursday 15 June 2017.
